A Seat at The Table - Now You're Speaking My Language

The National Disability Rights Network (NDRN) is currently holding their 2017 Annual Conference in Baltimore, Maryland. Gathered here are advocates, attorneys, federal partners, board members, protection and advocacy groups, and more. This week, over 30 workshops and presentations have been organized with the intent on training, informing, sharing, and empowering. It is an amazing and rewarding experience for all attendees, and I look forward to witnessing their continued work. The rooms are filled with advocacy and policy veterans, who sit next to some barely half a year into the field.

Today, during one of our morning meetings, I was inspired by the comments of Lisa Navarro, an advocate at Disability Rights California (DRC). In her many years as an advocate, Lisa has learned how to navigate intersectional spaces skillfully and respectfully. As a result, she has established trusting relationships with clients in various environments, integrating herself into their culture instead of evoking fear within those communities.

During our chat, Lisa shared some best practices for empowering and lasting client relationships and some of her experiences in California.

Thank you, Lisa, for your time.
